Women Making A Difference
Nokomis Foundation recently honored Mary Ortiz, RN MPA as a Woman of Achievement at the YWCA’s Annual Tribute Awards Celebration. Mary is a passionate advocate for healthcare reform, a Nokomis economic self-sufficiency focus. As a nurse Mary has seen first-hand the negative impact of gaps in the healthcare delivery system. She has worked tirelessly on her own time to bring her concerns to legislators and to educate fellow-citizens. The patients and families she serves at the Lacks Cancer Center at St. Mary’s Health Care inspire her advocacy. Nokomis salutes Mary Ortiz as a strong example of what, in the words of Margaret Meade, a “thoughtful, committed citizen” can do to create change. Whether educating the public through impromptu outreach at the local farmer’s market or presenting well-prepared points to her congressional representatives, Mary is a woman who has found her voice and uses it tirelessly to advocate for change in the healthcare field.
