Equalty Pay Day
The National Committee on Pay Equity has declared Tuesday, April 20, Equal Pay Day. The day is observed in April to indicate how far into each year a woman must work to receive as much as a man was paid in the previous year. Tuesday symbolizes the day when womens wages catch up to mens wages from the previous week. For women of color the wage gap is greater. It is suggested that WOMEN WEAR RED ON EQUAL PAY DAY to show that women and minorities are in the red with their pay! It is estimated that sex-based wage discrimination costs a woman up to two million dollars over her lifetime!
Michigan is 44th in the US for womens wage parity with men! The wage gap between men and women nationally is 77%, but in Michigan it is 72%. Legislation to amend the (Michigan) Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act will address this issue and should be passed NOW by the Michigan Legislature. Urge you Legislator to support this!
